It’s with great love and affection, sorrow and a deep sadness that I put pen to paper to jot this ululation of my undying love for you which has and shall forever exist. There is disillusionment; too much of which is simmering like the molten lava which overflows from the volcanoes of Hawaii. As I narrate this missive, I hope that it shall find you, not on your deathbed, but rather, in the recovery ward.
As I jot these few lines, I weep and wail for all the lost glory which was quite short-lived; which was projected and promulgated at the time of independence. The glory has created neither wealth nor freedom, which in essence was meant to spur the growth of a better continent for the most beautiful people on earth-Africans. When there was great hope for a continent that had been subjected to the ills of colonialism by its slave masters but also due to the inadequacy of your corrupt leaders.
The continent that continues to be raped and ravaged. Torn in shreds, both by the West, and its own greedy, unaccountable and inept leaders. From being the richest you have been brought to your knees by unnecessary wars, intense tribalism and regionalism, nepotism, Aids and malaria, cholera, a lack of clean drinking water and a lamentable system of governance that is prevalent in most of the continent with the few exceptions being Ghana, Zambia and Botswana where democracy thrives. Even though autocracy and dictatorships are just but a few of the afflictions that have persistently and perennially dogged the continent, squalor and other ills have created masses of victims subjected to abject poverty. A people always on the move from one region or country to another, who will forever live in pieces as peace shall always remain an unattainable dream; as their leaders wrangle over power and control of the vast resources that exist on this most diverse and vast of continents. All this has been compounded by an already dire political model that is wanting in democracy and as such promulgates a constant cycle of poor leadership and dire political dilemma.
As I write my tears are flowing uncontrollably like the mighty Victoria falls, one of the most awe-inspiring landmarks of your natural beauty. If only you could see how great you are!
You are like a skillful and most wonderful lover but like many, your afflictions supersede you. You discourage us because you do not have the will to change course.
Kenya, once the pride of the Eastern African region, now is the bride of endemic corruption, appropriation of ill gotten wealth from government coffers, insecurity, simmering tribal tension due to the previous regimes misappropriation and distribution of land to their tribal brothers, political cronies and sycophants.
In the midst of all these wickedness, there is a bright spark of hope that burns within the younger generation. One that strives for change in the comfort of its inevitability, holding on to a collective belief and conviction that a new page must be turned in order that progress can be achieved; and we can move forward.
NB.
This letter is dedicated to all those Africans, wherever they may be in the world that are doing whatever they can within their ability to bring about meaningful amelioration and change; within and without the African continent.
